The Unequivocal Guide to Walking the Ringling Bridge in Sarasota

If you’ve been to Sarasota, there are few places as iconic as the Ringling Bridge. The half mile mile bridge stretches from downtown Sarasota to Bird Key over Sarasota Bay and is beloved by pedestrians, bicyclists, drivers, and passengers alike. As the widest precast segmental bridge in Florida (let’s just say it’s very wide), it accommodates four lanes of traffic, emergency and bicycle lanes, and pedestrian sidewalks. Officially named the “John Ringling Causeway”, no one actually calls it that when in conversation; “The Ringling Bridge” will do.

If you are new to the area or haven’t quite made it to your first bridge walk yet, here answers to frequently-asked questions that will have you walking like a local in no-time.

A quick history

Originally built by John Ringling in 1925, his goal was to connect Lido and Longboat Keys to the mainland, where he owned a great deal of real estate. There’s a rumor/urban myth that he used circus elephants to haul the construction materials in the water, but no credible confirmation of this can be found. In 1959, the bridge was replaced to handle increased traffic and by 2003, a third bridge was built at a cost of $68 million. Believe it or not, there was a great deal of local unrest over the newest bridge as many felt a fancy bridge meant Sarasota was turning into the next Miami. That has since been proven untrue.

Let’s get walking

Where do I park?

The easiest place to park is along the Bayfront in Sarasota near Marina Jack or Bayfront Park. The closer you are to the bridge, the less spots you’ll find but unless there’s a big event going on, you are sure to find a spot somewhere.

How much is parking?

It’s 100% free along the waterfront (see? Not Miami). If you choose to park downtown, you’ll find metered and two-hour parking.

Which side of the bridge do I begin walking on?

You have your pick between the downtown side or the Bird Key side – there certainly is no right or wrong. That said, the vast majority of pedestrians park near the downtown Bayfront and then walk to Bird Key (or further) and then back.

Does it matter whether I walk with traffic or against?

Pedestrians will feel very secure with a barrier between traffic and the sidewalk. You’ll find walkers going different ways on both sides. So we suggest to let your camera be the guide! The sun sets over the west side and there’s a great view back to Golden Gate Point and the city when looking to the east – often even prettier as all the city lights come on at sunset.

How long is the bridge walk?

It’s about 3 miles roundtrip from Marina Jack to the end of the bridge and back. If you keep up a decent walking pace, it’ll take you 45 minutes to an hour to walk from Marina Jack to the end of the bridge and back.

What’s the best time of day?

This is completely your preference. For those who want to avoid the heat of the, hit the bridge before 9am or after 5:00pm. The bonus is that the sunrise and sunset are beautiful! Be sure to check your weather app to find out when sunset is and give yourself time to experience it.

What do I wear?

This answer to this may seem obvious but get on your work-out gear and hit the pavement. Sneakers are smarter than flip flops and long sleeves are a good option if there’s a breeze. A hat and sunscreen are a good bet when it’s daytime.

What will I find on both ends of the bridge?

On the city side, Hart’s Landing Bait Shop offers live and frozen bait and tackle, beer and wine and light food. You’ll likely find people fishing – under the bridge or on the pier.

On the Bird Key side, the walk will lead you to Ringling Bridge Causeway Park. This small park has one of the best views in the city. People enjoy picnicking, strolling along the water, or launching their kayaks. Runners of the bridge often keep going all the way to St. Armands Circle – about 2.5 miles from Ringling Plaza before heading back.

But enough reading, it’s about time you get going and experience the Ringling Bridge for yourself! If you want to learn more about downtown Sarasota, Bird Key, or St. Armands real estate, then please contact me.
